As Children Grow Up, Confiding in their Parents Becomes More Difficult

Data Visualization | Graphic Design

Overview

As part of Data Visualization and Analytics class, we were challenged to create a graph from a data source. I was intruiged this set of archived data from Statistics Canada: Health behaviour in school-aged children 2002, student response to question: How easy is it to talk to the following persons about things that really bother you? The data set showed different people that children talk to, such as "Older brother(s)", "Best friend", "Stepfather (or mother's boyfriend)", etc. I decided to focus on "Mother" and "Father".

Insights

Boys find it similarly easy to talk to their mothers and fathers about their problems. But, it is slightly easier for boys to confide in their mothers.

Girls grow to find it more difficult to confide in their fathers. From age 13, the majority of girls think it is difficult to talk to their fathers about their problems.

Value

Clearly displaying the data on a graph improves legibility and facilitates sharing the insights of the data.
